BA (Hons) Criminology & Law
Course Overview
The programme has been designed to appeal to students who may wish to undertake careers within the criminal justice system including probation work, youth work, the police service, and the prison service. Alternatively students successfully completing the BA (Hons) Criminology and Law programme can progress onto a Level 7 Masters degree externally in a relevant discipline.
The programme offers an academically focused curriculum which develops a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of crime and criminal justice both nationally and internationally.
The programme offers a broad base of subject knowledge covering issues such as penology, offending behaviour, criminal justice and victimology, in line with the subject knowledge and understanding expected of a graduate of criminology. In addition to this the programme offers a number of legal modules including Criminal Law, Immigration and Asylum Law, and Criminal Litigation.
You will learn through a mix of lectures, seminars, case studies, simulations/role play, work-based projects, self-directed study, and research. Guest speakers and industry visits will enhance your learning and application of this into work-based situations.
You will be expected to undertake 10 hours per week of self-directed study per module. You will also receive directed student support where you will receive pastoral and academic guidance and study skills to support dissertation development.

Full-time: 2-3 days per week. (12 hours per week delivery).
Part-time: 1 day per week. (6 hours per week delivery).
The programme includes a varied range of academic assessments designed in line with employer consultation, to provide you with key skills and attributes. These include (but are not limited to); reports; essays; presentations; open book exams; simulations; discussion forums; and dissertation.
48 UCAS Points or an Access to HE Qualification. Including GCSEs at Grade 9-4 or equivalent in English Language and Maths.
Those with previous experience or learning that is relevant may be eligible via out Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process for accreditation towards this course. All external applicants must complete a satisfactory interview.
Full time: £7,400. Part time: £3,700 per year.
Students successfully completing the BA (Hons) Criminology and Law programme can progress onto a Level 7 Masters degree externally in a relevant discipline.
This course can either be studied at Selby College or Wakefield College.
The course allowed me to gain key skills, including communication, team building and problem-solving which I will use in my future career in the uniformed services sector.
